Baritone Ukulele Tuner: the complete guide
By Vivek Badoni, music teacher · Updated
This online baritone ukulele tuner opens with Baritone ukulele selected and tunes to D G B E. The baritone is the largest common ukulele, with a deeper, warmer voice than soprano, concert or tenor ukuleles, and a tuning that guitarists will recognise immediately.
Baritone ukulele tuning: D G B E
| String | Note | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| 4th (top) | D3 | 146.83 Hz |
| 3rd | G3 | 196.00 Hz |
| 2nd | B3 | 246.94 Hz |
| 1st (bottom) | E4 | 329.63 Hz |
These are exactly the same notes as the four thinnest strings of a guitar. Unlike most other ukuleles, the baritone is not re-entrant: the strings go steadily from low to high.
Baritone vs other ukuleles
| Ukulele | Usual tuning | Sound |
|---|---|---|
| Soprano | G C E A (high G) | Bright, classic ukulele |
| Concert | G C E A (high G) | Fuller, a little louder |
| Tenor | G C E A (high or low G) | Rich, more sustain |
| Baritone | D G B E | Deep and warm, guitar-like |
For soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles, use the ukulele tuner instead.
Chord shapes on a baritone ukulele
Because a baritone uses guitar tuning on four strings, guitar chord shapes on the top four strings work directly. Note, though, that shapes you learned on a GCEA ukulele produce different chords on a baritone: the ukulele "C" shape sounds as G. Look up any chord in the chord finder and use the top four strings of the guitar diagram.
Tips
- Tune in a quiet room and hold your device near the soundhole.
- Strum the open strings when you're done: a correctly tuned baritone gives a soft G6 chord.
- Use Tune by ear below to hear each string's note and match it.
